Epimedium is a traditional herb recognized for its active compound icariin, which acts as a mild PDE5 inhibitor, contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and rich in phytoestrogens that ease hormonal fluctuations, reduce severity of hot flashes, and balance moods during perimenopause and menopause. Icariin boosts nitric oxide levels in the body, relaxes muscles, increases blood flow to reproductive tissues enhancing sensual arousal, sensation and natural lubrication. It is often called the “natural aphrodisiac.” It stimulates osteoblasts to support bone health and prevention of osteoporosis. Studies reveal that icariin antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds support cardiovascular health, lowers cholesterol, plaque build-up, and reduces oxidative DNA damage by increasing blood flow to the brain. It is currently being studied for its neuroprotective and cognitive-boosting benefits. [PubMed Review Heliyon. 2023 Oct 27].

Achyranthes bidentate radix contains 270 metabolites, terpenoids and steroids exhibit potent anti-inflammatory effects and help modulate the immune system according to research conducted by Oxford Academia, [NIH 2024, August 1]. Clinical studies support that root extracts help mitigate neuronal cell apoptosis and inhibit the accumulation of advanced glycation end products in the brain tissue helping to improve memory and concentration, [NIH 2013, June 25]. In TCM it is widely used as an adrenal and premier nourishing Yin tonic to alleviate Yin deficiency symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, restlessness, irritability, anxiety, brain fog, dizziness, tinnitus, blurry vision, brittle nails and/or malar flush. [Curr Issues Mol Biol. 2025 May 3].

Glochidion puberum offers notable health, dietary and ecological benefits. It is prized for its rich phytochemical properties: flavonoids, triterpenoids and polyphenols which deliver powerful antioxidant and cellular defense by scavenging harmful free radicals and activating endogenous antioxidant enzymes, [Research Gate 2025, June 22]. Studies suggest that extracts are highly anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective, suppressing reactive oxygen species in the brain, offering potential as a natural contender against neurogenerative diseases, [PubMed Central 2012, Aug 19]. It has been used for centuries around the world due to its bioactive and pharmacological compounds for a wide range of health benefits - antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, neuroprotective, antithrombotic, and effective against cancer according to Bioassay clinical experiments of Glochidon velutinum according to the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Medicine. [Pharmedico 2024, Sept 02].

Curculigo capitulate is a widely used rhizome tonic herb in TCM and Ayurvedic medicine to manage perimenopausal and menopausal hormonal, endocrine and reproductive health changes. Rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, fighting oxidative stress, protecting brain cells and cellular. Cuscuta is often used in TCM as an adrenal-yang aphrodisiac; sexual well-being, reproductive health and an anti-aging tonic; and in Ayurvedic topical medicines for damaged scalps and skin brightening skincare due to its high concentration of flavonoids, phenolic acids, steroids, hydroquinone, lignans, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It protects the liver and brain’s cognitive deficits due to its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. One of its extracts, kaempferol has strong antioxidant, estrogenic actions and an impressive effect on immune responses. [Science Direct, Ethnopharmacology 2024, Nov 18]. Cuscuta extracts can improve bone mineral density and reduce bone loss associated with osteoporosis. [NIH 2019, Dec 5].

Plantago asiatica is a versatile medicinal herb known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The seeds Che Qian Zi, are (often used similarly to psyllium) aid bowel regularity, and the leaves relieve diarrhea. It is highly effective at soothing inflamed mucous membranes in the digestive and urinary tract. Goji Berries - Lycium barbarum Regularly eating a small serving of dried goji berries may help prevent or delay the development of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, in healthy middle-aged people, according to a small, randomized trial conducted at the University of California, Davis. [ EYE HEALTH AND VISION SCIENCE January 13, 2022 – Sacramento UC Davis] Dried goji berries may provide protection against age-related macular degeneration - Study shows small serving of the fruit increased protective pigments in the eye.

Goji berries are a source of numerous bioactive components, such as polysaccharides, carotenoids, and phenolics. These molecules can be isolated from goji berries and further used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. As Yu, Wu, and Niu (2009) demonstrated, LBP extract exhibited supporting effects on plasma lipids and the risk of cardiovascular diseases to the elderly [84]. In addition, based on the observed hypoglycemic activities and increased HDL concentration, after three months of supplementation (300 mg/day), LBP has been considered as a prominent adjuvant therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes [89]. Although several mechanisms may account for these effects, there is a finding that the water goji berries extract exerted antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects by controlling the expression of inflammatory mRNAs in overweight and hypercholesterolemia-suffering subjects. [Antioxidants (Basel). 2022 Jan 27;11(2):248. doi: 10.3390/antiox11020248 PMCID: PMC8868247 PMID: 35204130] Health Benefits and Applications of Goji Berries in Functional Food Products Development: A Review.

Paeonia lactiflora – (Bai Shao) Chinese White Peony White peony's key compound paeoniflorin has documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, helping regulate the production of inflammatory mediators, and the herb is studied for immune-regulating and hormone-balancing support. [Linden Botanicals, summarizing Frontiers in Pharmacology research] Total glucosides of peony have also been studied in a systematic review and meta-analysis for safely reducing disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus, reflecting the depth of modern research on this herb (though that specific application is unrelated to this formula's intended use). [Chen et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022] Paeonia lactiflora is prized in TCM for its phytoestrogen compounds found in the root to regulate hormonal imbalances, and promote menstrual support by soothing menstrual cramps, reduce bloating and relieve muscle spasms, and manage menopausal symptoms, hot flashes, anxiety and mood swings. In TCM it is traditionally considered a premier blood tonic used to nourish the liver blood, support hepatic detoxification and promote healthy gut microbiome.

Angelica sinensis - Dang Gui A cerebral infarction pharmacology review similarly notes the herb is used to enrich blood, promote circulation, and modulate the immune system, with anti-arteriosclerotic and antioxidant properties documented in research. [Wu & Hsieh, Chinese Medicine journal, 2011].
