Note that cookie-based opt-outs must be performed on each device and browser that you wish to have opted out. For example, if you have opted out on your device browser, that opt-out will not be effective on your mobile device. Additionally, if you opt out on one of your devices, that opt out may not be effective on all of your devices. However, please be advised that cookie-based opt-outs are not effective on some mobile services. Some browsers have a Do Not Track (“DNT”) feature that lets users signal to websites that they do not want to have their online activities tracked. Please note that we do not respond to or honor DNT signals or similar mechanisms transmitted by web browsers. However, if you are a resident of California, Colorado, or Connecticut, or another state with a privacy law that applies to such signals, we treat opt-out preference signals as a means of opting out of the sale or sharing of personal information, or of opting out of the processing of personal information for targeted advertising, as applicable. Please see the sections titled California Privacy Rights and other U.S. State Privacy Rights below for more information.
U.S. State Privacy Laws
U.S. states are increasingly taking action to address consumer privacy. In 2018, California passed the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”), which is a comprehensive privacy law that took effect in 2020. That law was later amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”) on January 1, 2023. Since then, nearly half of US states have adopted comprehensive consumer privacy laws, and other states are considering similar laws. We refer to these laws collectively as the “state privacy laws.” These state privacy laws give residents of certain US states more transparency and control over their personal information. If you make your store available to residents of those US states, then these laws might apply to your handling of personal information when residents of those states visit and transact with your store.
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, grants California residents significant control over their personal data. Residents can know what data is collected, request deletion, opt-out of the sale/sharing of their information, and receive equal service. It requires businesses to provide transparency, implement security measures, and respect consumer choices, with enforcement by the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) and fines for violations.
