Defining "Non-Toxic" Standards
- Unregulated Marketing Terms: Marketing verbiage such as "clean," "natural," "pure," and/or "hypoallergenic" are not legally defined or verified prior to or after product launch. VRONI is committed to full transparency.
- Regulation Gap with Limited FDA Bans: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not legally define or regulate the term "clean" or "non-toxic" for skincare, beauty products, personal care products or cosmetics. The U.S. only bans or restricts 11 chemicals from cosmetic products. Many large skincare companies and chemical companies lobby and donate to political parties to enable all these horrific chemicals into our food, skincare and beauty products. In comparison, the European Union (EU) banned approximately 1,693 chemicals in skincare, beauty and cosmetic products.
- Transparency Requirements: VRONI mandates full label disclosure of all ingredient components which conventional regulations often exempt companies from revealing.
- Safety Verification of Restricted Substances: Safety is best measured by third-party certifications and strict avoidance of restricted substances, VRONI is committed to never use or formulate skincare and beauty healthcare products containing synthetic fragrances, silicones, microplastics, GMO's, mineral oils, dyes, parabens (methyl, butyl, ethyl, propyl), phthalates, formaldehyde releasers, aluminum, DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine), TEA (triethanolamine), DMDM Hydantoin & UREA (imidazolidinyl – formaldehyde preservatives), PEG (polyethylene glycol), PFAS ("forever chemicals"), siloxanes, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), triclosan, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol (PG), and butylene glycol which are associated to hormone disruption, cancer and other health risks.
How to Identify Safer Skincare and Beauty Products
- Read Labels and Identify endocrine disruptors in ingredients: Checking product ingredient lists carefully for explicit names or related terms such as parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben), phthalates (often hidden under "fragrance" or "parfum"), chemical UV filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate), or BHT, BHA.
- Choose Fragrance-Free: Choose products labeled "fragrance-free" rather than "unscented," which may still use masking fragrances.
- Use Safety Databases: Cross-reference products using resources like the Environmental Working Group database or the Safe Cosmetics Program to check product safety ratings.
- Look for Certifications: Select items backed by strict organic or natural standards that restrict EDCs. Choose skincare or beauty products certified by recognized natural and organic standards such as NATRUE, ECOCERT, or COSMOS, which restrict or ban most known endocrine disruptors. These certifications ensure stricter ingredient screening and safer formulations.
- Look for transparency and clean-label beauty brands: Selecting brands with clear, full ingredient disclosure and avoiding those with proprietary blends that mask harmful chemicals. Clean beauty brands often commit to avoiding known endocrine-disrupting chemicals and prioritize safer, naturally derived ingredients.
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), also known as endocrine disruptors, are substances capable of altering the normal functioning of the endocrine system by interfering with hormone production, signaling, or action. These disruptions can lead to significant health issues, including reproductive disorders, neurobehavioral changes, immune system malfunctions, and even increased risks of chronic diseases. EDCs in skincare are synthetic or natural compounds that can mimic, block, or interfere with the body's natural hormones. Our skin absorbs topical ingredients into the bloodstream, minimizing exposure to these ingredients is a common goal for clean-label routines.
EDCs act through various mechanisms, such as binding to hormone receptors, altering hormone synthesis, and inducing epigenetic changes. Some endocrine disruptors are persistent organic pollutants (POPs), meaning they are resistant to degradation and can accumulate in organisms over time, posing long-term health and environmental risks.
In the context of cosmetics, endocrine disruptors examples, such as BHT, can enter the body through direct contact with the skin, inhalation, or ingestion. This has raised significant concerns about their widespread use and potential cumulative effect.
VRONI is committed to never using endocrine disrupting chemicals, ingredients, carcinogens or plasticizers in our skincare and beauty healthcare products.
Hormonal Disruptors and Plasticizers
- Parabens: Used as shelf-life extenders; mimic estrogen and disrupt the endocrine system - look for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben.
- Phthalates: Found in nail polish and synthetic scents; linked to reproductive and developmental harm. Often hidden under the term "fragrance" or specific acronyms like DBP.
- Oxybenzone: Used in chemical sunscreens; causes hormone disruption and skin irritation.
- Chemical Sunscreens: Filters like oxybenzone (benzophenone-3) and octinoxate can display hormone-disrupting activities in studies.
- Benzophenone-3: Synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives that may interfere with normal hormone function.
- BHT & BHA: Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are synthetic antioxidants commonly used in skincare, personal hygiene cosmetics products to prevent the oxidation of fats and oils. Both are under scrutiny for potential health effects. BHT is suspected of endocrine-disrupting activity, and BHA is classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" by some agencies.
- Unlisted Fragrances: Generic "parfum" or "fragrance" labels can legally mask dozens of undisclosed chemical compounds, including hidden phthalates.
- Bisphenols: Organic compounds usually found in packaging materials, bottles, and coatings. Bisphenol A (BPA) is probably the best known due to its extensively cited potential toxicity. It has been banned or restricted in many products in the US, Canada, and the EU.
Carcinogens and Irritants
- Formaldehyde and Releasers: Used in hair straighteners and nail polish; act as known carcinogens and strong allergens.
- Coal Tar: Found in specific hair dyes; acts as a recognized carcinogen.
- Hydroquinone: Used for skin lightening; linked to severe skin discoloration and damage.
Preservatives and Hidden Toxins
- Methylisothiazolinone: Used in liquid shampoos; triggers severe skin rashes and contact allergies.
- Synthetic Fragrance: A catch-all term for hidden chemical blends that trigger chronic allergies and respiratory irritation.
Choosing Tocopherol: a natural and multifaceted alternative
Tocopherol, a form of vitamin E, is a natural antioxidant that offers a compelling alternative to synthetic options like BHT. In skincare, beauty products and cosmetics, Tocopherol not only protects skincare formulations from oxidation but also provides significant skin benefits. These include acting as a free-radical scavenger, preventing oxidative damage caused by solar radiation, and supporting skin repair processes.
Research indicates that tocopherol in skincare has photoprotective properties, highlighting its potential to protect the skin from chronic UV damage and photoaging. Additionally, tocopherol helps inhibit lipid peroxidation, a process critical for maintaining skin integrity and supports immune function in the epidermis.
One key benefit of tocopherol in skincare is its ability to stay stable in cosmetic products. When it's combined with esters, it becomes even more resistant to breaking down, while still being effective on the skin. Plus, when paired with other antioxidants, tocopherol's ability to protect the skin from UV damage is greatly increased, offering double the protection against the harmful effects of the sun.
As a plant-derived compound, tocopherol does not exhibit the risks associated with synthetic antioxidants or chemical endocrine disruptors. Its biocompatibility and safety profile make it a preferred choice for VRONI aiming to align with modern consumer preferences and regulatory standards. Developing skincare and beauty products without endocrine disruptors is an absolute must thanks to the incorporation of natural ingredients or alternatives.
A call for safer and sustainable choices
As the skincare and beauty healthcare industry evolves, the shift from synthetic antioxidants like BHT in skincare and beauty products to natural alternatives such as tocopherol reflects a broader commitment to safety, sustainability, and consumer trust. By choosing ingredients that respect both human health and the environment, brands can lead the way in responsible innovation and offer a natural, effective, and eco-friendly solution for modern cosmetic formulations. With its well documented antioxidant, photoprotective, and skin-repair properties, tocopherol is a safer and more effective skincare and beauty healthcare ingredient.
Quality Management System Ensures You Receive Quality Skincare and Beauty Healthcare Products
Our quality management system, or QMS, means that VRONI has adopted a rigorous process to assess the quality of its product at every stage of production and remedy any problems that may occur. An independent, third-party assessor verifies our company's compliance.
