Our Restorative Supertonic herbal blend is a modified version of Shi Quan Da Bu Tang, 1,000-year-old classical formula with an extensive research base — including a formal traditional RCT protocol for chronic fatigue, immunomodulation studies, and reviews on individual herbs like Astragalus (a 19-study, 1,094-participant meta-analysis on immune response) and Dang Gui (hematopoiesis and immune regulation).

"Formulated from herbs with a long history of traditional use and a growing body of modern research interest."

Formula-Level Research
Our ten-herb blended herbal combination (Dang Gui, Licorice, Fu Ling, Rehmannia, Codonopsis, Astragalus, White Atractylodes, White Peony, Cinnamon bark, Chuan Xiong) aligns with the classical formula Shi Quan Da Bu Tang ("Ten-Flavor Great Tonifying Decoction," also known as Juzentaihoto in Japan and Sipjeondaebo-tang in Korea) — a nearly 1,000-year-old formula with a meaningful modern research base.

"Astragalus and Rehmannia are among the most-studied herbs in Chinese herbal medicine."

  • A narrative review in Longhua Chinese Medicine found that this tonic decoction is traditionally used to greatly tonify blood and vital energy, improving overall health and immunity, and has historically been used for weak constitution and general discomfort. The review also reports research showing effects on reducing treatment-related fatigue and supporting recovery during other therapies. [Bisogno et al., Longhua Chinese Medicine — lcm.amegroups.org]
  • A pharmacology paper on the formula's mechanism describes low toxicity in animal models and immunomodulatory, immune-potentiating effects, including stimulation of hemopoietic factors and interleukin production. [Zee-Cheng, Methods Find Exp Clin Pharmacol, 1992 — PubMed].
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's integrative medicine database notes preliminary clinical data indicating the formula may help improve anemia and has shown effectiveness in preventing recurrent acute ear infections in children, while noting mixed results for chronic fatigue in adults. [MSK Cancer Center — mskcc.org].
  • A formal randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial protocol was registered to evaluate the formula's efficacy and safety for chronic fatigue syndrome, reflecting its traditional use for qi and blood deficiency-related fatigue. [Oh et al., Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2020 — Wiley].
  • A veterinary-medicine review found the formula boosted T-cell production in aging mice and helped prevent osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats, alongside anti-tumor and chemotherapy-supportive effects noted elsewhere in the literature. [American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine].

Individual Ingredient Research

Dang Gui - Angelica sinensis Modern pharmacological research shows Angelica sinensis polysaccharides can promote hematopoiesis (blood cell production) and have immunoregulatory effects, providing a biomedical basis for its traditional Blood-tonifying reputation. Angelica sinensis is referred to as the “female ginseng,” a blood tonic promoting red blood cells to support fatigue and general blood deficiency; and improves blood circulation in the abdomen and pelvic cavity to support women’s reproductive health, regulate healthy menstrual cycles, PMS, menopausal transitions, and relieve pain. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, calming and relaxing properties due to its active compounds found in the root, called ferulic acid and Z-ligustilide. A cerebral infarction pharmacology review similarly notes the herb is used to enrich blood, promote circulation, and modulate the immune system, with anti-arteriosclerotic and antioxidant properties documented in research. [Wu & Hsieh, Chinese Medicine journal, 2011]

Chinese Licorice - Glycyrrhiza uralensis Frequently studied as an immune-modulating "harmonizing" herb in combination formulas; research on Astragalus-Poria-Licorice combinations shows synergistic immune-regulatory activity in network pharmacology studies. [PMC-Astragalus/Poria drug-pair mechanism study]. Glycyrrhiza uralensis is highly valued for its natural healing and harmonizing properties in TCM. Modern research shows anti-inflammatory, antiviral, hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties due to the glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, and triterpenoids compounds responsible for its medicinal effects to detoxify pathogens, clear heat, tonify the pancreas, replenish Qi and harmonize the other herbs in the formula. [NIH, PubMed, 2023, Mar 2].

Fú Ling -Poria cocos Has been shown to regulate the body's immune system, with its polysaccharide component (Pachymaran) demonstrating immunomodulatory activity by activating relevant cell-signaling pathways. [PMC network pharmacology study, 2024] Fú Ling is a popular adaptogen known to “calm the spirit.” This ancient mushroom has been used for centuries in TCM formulations, classified as a tonic herb with mild sedative, immune modulating and diuretic properties. A 2023 clinical trial study conducted on insomnia sufferers with a mean age of 55 concluded that Poria cocos sclerotium improves the quality of sleep. [NIH, PubMed, 2023, Oct 1]. It is often used in modern herbal formulas to help anxiety, tension, stress and insomnia. Poria extracts increase serotonin levels and lower stress-induced sugar cravings. It supports digestive harmony by reducing sluggish digestion, bloating, diarrhea, restrained dampness and edema to normalize metabolic imbalances.

Sheng Di Huang) - Rehmannia Research shows Rehmannia glutinosa and its active compounds have wide-ranging pharmacological actions on the blood, immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, and nervous systems, consistent with its traditional role nourishing Yin and the Kidney. [Zhang, Li & Jia, phyto-pharmacological review, 2008]. Tradionally used in women’s healthcare formulas to cool Blood; nourishes Yin; and support adrenal functions. Extensive Biomedical research revealed that Rehmannia glutinosa was regarded as an “herbal research value” for presenting anti-aging properties; anti-infective - clears underlying heat symptoms, rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, osteoblastogenesis qualities, and supports immune system. [Biomedicine & Pharmacology Volume 168, December 2023].

Dang Shen - Codonopsis pilosula Is traditionally used to strengthen the middle burner, increase Qi, nourish Blood, and address fatigue, diminished appetite, and breathlessness, and its polysaccharides are studied as natural immunomodulators. [Frontiers in Immunology review, 2026] A broader mechanism review found significant pharmacological effects on immune function regulation, cardiovascular protection, and nervous system function. [PMC systematic review] Codonopsis pilosula is an adaptogen traditionally used to address chronic fatigue, increase stamina and endurance, helping the body adapt to physical and mental stress. Clinically research reveals it supports digestion, nutrient absorption and strengthens stomach and pancreatic functions. Clinical studies indicate it helps mitigate oxidative stress, regulates blood sugars, decreases insulin resistance and lipids levels.

Huang Qi – Astragalus A meta-analysis of human studies evaluated Astragalus's effect on humoral and cellular immune response across 19 studies and 1,094 participants, one of the more robust human-data reviews available for any single herb in this formula. [PubMed, 2023] A sports-medicine systematic review also notes research on Astragalus supplementation to help mitigate post-exercise immune suppression in athletes. [Antonelli & Donelli].
Astragalus is our Queen herb, it is the defensive shield that supports our Wei-Qi to protect us from exterior viral or bacterial pathogens. It is routinely used in TCM formulations to support immune health, cardiovascular health, lower blood sugar and increase adaptability, stamina, and vitality. [Front. Pharmacol. 15 May 2025].

Bai Zhu - White Atractylodes Documented in multiple network-pharmacology and formula studies as a core Spleen-Qi-supporting herb; research on its polysaccharide component shows it can help support healthy gut flora balance promoting beneficial Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria populations. [USPTO patent filing citing pharmacological research].

White Peony - Bai Shao Paeonia lactiflora White peony's key compound paeoniflorin has documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, helping regulate the production of inflammatory mediators, and the herb is studied for immune-regulating and hormone-balancing support. [Linden Botanicals, summarizing Frontiers in Pharmacology research] Total glucosides of peony have also been studied in a systematic review and meta-analysis for safely reducing disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus, reflecting the depth of modern research on this herb (though that specific application is unrelated to this formula's intended use). [Chen et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022] Paeonia lactiflora is prized in TCM for its phytoestrogen compounds found in the root to regulate hormonal imbalances, and promote menstrual support by soothing menstrual cramps, reduce bloating and relieve muscle spasms, and manage menopausal symptoms, hot flashes, anxiety and mood swings. In TCM it is traditionally considered a premier blood tonic used to nourish the liver blood, support hepatic detoxification and promote healthy gut microbiome.

Cinnamon Bark (Rou Gui) & Chuan Xiong Ligusticum Both are established members of classical cardiovascular- and circulation-supporting formulas. A phytochemistry and pharmacology review found Chuan Xiong Rhizoma contains numerous bioactive compounds with wide-ranging documented effects, particularly relevant to cardiocerebrovascular and gynecological applications. [PubMed review, 2024]
